Adoption Fees

Why does adopting a pug cost this much?

We understand that rescue pricing may be higher than you might expect. Please note that shelters are able to adopt out dogs for much lower due to county funding sources. Rescues rely on donations to pay vet costs, and adoption fees do not cover the entirety of a dog’s care in our rescue.

Adoption fees:

Dogs
  • $800.00 - Puppies from 0 months to 3 months
  • $750.00 - Puppies from 4 months to 12 months
  • $700.00 - Dogs from 1 years to 5 years
  • $600.00 - Dogs from 5 years to 9 years
  • $500.00 - Dogs aged 9 years and up

Senior program: Seniors animals make the most wonderful companions for senior humans. If you're 65+ and interested in a 9+ year old dog, we are happy to offer a discount of 50%.

Bonded pairs: If you adopt a bonded pair, we will take $100 off their combined adoption fee.

Puppy reimbursement: Puppies too young to be altered will require a spay/neuter contract. Upon completion of the contract, we will reimburse you $100.

Pug mixes & Frenchies: Pug mixes are priced lower than our standard fees, and Frenchies are priced higher. Their individual prices will be displayed with their profiles.

Included in adoption:

Along with daily care costs, the adoption fees help us cover vaccination and medical costs for the dogs. At adoption, the majority of Bay Area Pug Project dogs will be current on their vaccines and will have the following:

Dogs
  • Rabies vaccine (1 yr. or 3 yr.)
  • Distemper vaccine (DHLPP or DHLPP-C)
  • Bordetella vaccine
  • Negative heartworm test
  • Altered (spayed/neutered)
  • Microchipped

Why rescue and not buy?

If you see our adoption fees and wonder why you shouldn't just go to a breeder, it's important to remember that most dogs purchased from a breeder will not be fully vaccinated (puppy series) nor altered. Those costs add up, so don't forget to factor that in when weighing your options. In rescue, we often see owner surrenders from families who went to breeders and could not afford the maintenance costs of the dog. Please keep in mind that pugs have expensive upkeep (but are so worth it!)
