We introduced you to this beautiful girl a few weeks ago after we pulled her from Contra Costa Animal Services. She had clearly just been separated from her babies, most likely after finishing nursing. She arrived at the shelter emaciated and still lactating, and we suspect she simply wasn’t getting the nutrition she needed while caring for her puppies.
From the moment she arrived, Pumpkin wanted nothing more than to be loved. She immediately sought out affection, wanted to be in our arms, and was very happy to discover that she’d be getting lots of nutrient-dense puppy food, too. She’s an incredibly easy girl to love.
Pumpkin is potty trained, gets attached to her people quickly, and happily sleeps in bed with you. She has the energy of a young pug, although her teeth tell a different story. Our vet estimates she could be anywhere from 2–3 to 4–6 years old. Either way, she’s full of life, energy, and personality.
She’s the kind of dog who will stare at you and paw at you until you give her the pets she’s asking for. She’ll climb into your lap or your arms and press her face right up against yours. She’s smart, very food-motivated, and eager to be with her people, so we think she’ll pick up new things quickly.
Pumpkin does have some separation anxiety and has figured out ways to escape when she wants to find her person. For that reason, we think she’d do best in a home where someone is around most of the time, or with someone who can bring her along with them while she settles in and gains confidence.
She still needs to gain several pounds, but we know she’ll get there with proper nutrition. For now, she’s eating puppy food three times a day and doing well. She’s fantastic with other dogs, kids, and people, and despite everything she’s been through, she’s still such a happy, loving girl.
Pumpkin will be spayed and have her dental cleaning on Tuesday, September 29, and she’ll be ready to head home shortly after.
